A few years ago, hiking through Gatineau National Park, Quebec, a friend and I came across a stunning viewpoint from which you had the most incredible vista of Canadian plains. There was a flatness before me that didn't really compute. Why was I standing in such a mountainous area, before this vast flatness? And through it, just one straight road, plunging through the repetition with little houses either side here and there, maybe a cul de sac shooting off to another private farm every kilometer. We saw pumpkins for sale when we drove down that road.
